Square Foot Gardening - Aug Update Pt 1

You gotta know when to grow 'em and know when to sow 'em
Know when to leave them alone and know when to get them out of the ground before they get completely decimated by caterpillars, slugs, snails and the 'wettest Summer in recorded history' and folks, this is exactly what Simon and I did this past weekend.

We were brutal and pulled out all the carrots, cabbages, herbs, leeks and 'bunching onions'

These are what remain of the brassicas that the caterpillars haven't eaten their way through yet. This is kale, savoy cabbage, purple sprouting broccoli, calabrese broccoli, cauliflower and giant in 6" of soil brussell sprouts.

I know it is hard to see but above there are actually several chili's growing. They get a fair amount of sun and we've been picking them once they turn red.

Ah, the famous pea and bean wall. Now this is exactly what I pictured it would look like by August.
To the left is an aubergine (eggplant), then asparagus and to the far right is rhubarb. The aubergine may look strange and that is because I have taken off a lot of lower leaves. Although this is my first year of growing vegetables, I have this theory now about getting energy from the roots directly to the 'fruits' or vegetables as quickly and directly as possible. Even more so now I think this is important as Autumn and less sunshine hours are fastly approaching.

Ok, in the greenhouse this weekend I stripped all the leaves off of these poor greenhouse tomatoes. Was this cruel? I just wanted to get the pitiful crop of tomatoes we have growing to get as much from their roots as possible. Gosh tomatoes are not easy to grow are they?

This was a type of 'tomato bush' and again, I've taken quite a bit off in the hopes that these little green tomatoes will grow into something edible before the cold takes over.

You've done so well, Jennifer. You're the person who's inspired me most to want to try growing my own veg next year and hopefully expand once I can get somebody to do something about the garden. I can manage some pots for the time being though.

Go for it Sharon! It's quite fun watching the vegetables growing. (I know, get a life!) but seriously, you nurse these babies from seeds to healthy plants and it's really satisfying for me.

We started building planters in February by the way to make sure we had plenty of time before the seeds / seedlings went in so my advice is get some help in much earlier than you think as people can drag their ......whooo hoo! :D

take care
Jen

I won't be able to get the planters ready for next year as far too much will need to be done to the garden first and I just don't have the kind of energy or muscle power to do it myself. I'm already planning how I want it though and I've made a plan of the pots I'll be having next year. I obviously don't have a life either because I'm getting excited just thinking about it :)
