And the rest!
As previously mentioned, we moved the root veg planter in the front of the onion / garlic / peppers planter. The peppers have been planted behind the onions but they aren't visible in this pic. The root veg planted here are, to the left, parsnips, turnip and swede.
Oh gosh. The outdoor herbs. Again, hindsight is 20/20. Next year they will be brought to seedlings in a heated greenhouse first. But this year, well, this is what we've got and we're hoping by the end of the summer we may have enough to cook a meal or two with. :D
Well, I am amazed at how quickly the potato plants have sprouted! Truth be told we started using seaweed spray and garlic spray (both organic) last week and I swear overnight things started to grow. In the background are our tomatoes that are special 'bushy' type climbing tomatoes that should produce cherry tomatoes in abundance. Again, next year in heated greenhouse first ....but anyway, we've raised them up, admittingly in an unattractive but functional way, to get maximum sunlight.
The winter brassicas are in again! Last year was a flop but I had bought them in but this year, these are all Simon's babies grown from seed. All the way around, as a border, are marigolds, which we are hoping will act as little soldiers, guarding the brassicas from most evils. :D OH! And to the far top right is the chili peppers I'm growing! Bring on the heat.
Right, I'm not going to tell fibs here. We orginally had a raspberry 'stick' and a blackberry 'stick'. They remained sticks until last week when we composted them as they never sprouted so much as 1 leaf. They were dead. So we replaced them. We're happy to be patient with fruit trees and the like but they do need to show some sign of life after 6 months or else they'll get the chop.
Here are my big boys! Well, hopefully one day. I have planted here butternut squash, summer crookneck squash, winter squash, and to the far left, a pumpkin! :D The rest of the planter, which is still empty, will contain mixed guords and melon (which are currently still growing in the greenhouse).
Which leads me finally to the greenhouse. The tomatoes seem happy. I haven't specifically used tomato feed on my two kinds of tomatoes this year. Maybe we should have but every year we will learn more and more how to harvest more vegetables and fruits out of the space we have.
We are truly so excited and so grateful if we can get anything to grow and eat from our garden. It's been a bit costly with the wood, soil and plants but we feel within 3 years the cost will have paid for itself in the food we will have grown.
