May Square Foot Gardening Update - Pt. 2

The Decking. We have used the area on and around our existing deck to the best of our abilities. Here are a few pics:

A strategically placed french lavender (in the pot) will soon attact the bees! I plan on using the lavender for culinary purposes later in summer. More on that to come!

The jars you can see are 'sun jars'! The absorb the sun throughout the day and give a beautiful yellow glow at night. We sometimes bring them in on the evenings downstairs just to give a bit of atmosphere. You can't 'read by them' like a candle but they do add a certain charm to a room.

Ah. This somewhat haphazard looking mix of leaves are our cottage wildflowers. One, this will attract the bees we need for pollination and two, will provide my bedroom with freshly cut flowers for at least 4 months of the year - for free! More wildflowers have been planted in the front garden but again more on that to come soon.

Different varieties of strawberries have been planted here including, supposedly, climbing strawberries. But we have planted strawberry plants that will give a yield either early, mid or late season to help stagger the fruits of our labour! :D Yes that is netting over the strawberries to protect them from the birds. The netting is connected to a piece of battening you can just see to the far left of this photo. When we want to eat the berries we can simply lift the battening over the top of the decking rail and then place it down again. The weight of the battening ensures the netting stays put.
