Almost a continuation of the last post of what you can do with lemons, I just thought I'd post some ideas of what you can do with fruit so that they don't end up in the compost heap, or worse, in the bin.
Some of the ideas will be 'duh! I know' moments but sometimes gentle reminders is all it takes to get the motivation to ACT upon it. So, if you have fruit and you don't think you're going to get chance to eat it before it goes off here are some ideas:
Apples - make homemade applesauce. It's so easy to do and you can put it into a glass jar and use the applesauce on porridge/oatmeal, on its own for children, served with pork, or indeed on top of pork as a baste in the oven, use in baking instead of using butter, make applesauce muffins and throw in a few dried fruits with it.
Bananas - freeze them if they start to go brown. Or, make banana bread. Mash them and use in baking instead of butter. Make banana muffins or pancakes and throw in a few walnuts / pecans. Use as a base for a smoothie in the blender (if frozen same applies). Serve with ice cream to the kids as banana splits. Mash and spread over toast with peanut butter.
Oranges - make orange juice. Throw together a quick fruit salad with a couple of other fruits (or even a can of fruit cocktail). Make frozen orange juice ice cubes and serve with summer punch. Squeeze juice, and add water, pour into lollipop molds or empty yogurt pots and make frozen ice lollies for the kids.
Berries - freeze on baking trays and empty into a bag and keep for smoothies or pies. Add to yogurt or cereal. Add 1 berry per ice cube compartment and add water. Freeze and make a very interesting ice cube for summer drinks. Make fantastic muffins.
